Rugs

One of the best ways to identify how a rug was created and it’s origin is by examining the reverse side of the rug. The individual knots should be different from each other with a slight irregularity between each knot, as human hand have made each one with slightly different tension. Some rugs need a high knot count in order to create floral or curvilinear design. Rugs with a geometric design do not need such high knot count in order for the design to be interpreted. A high knot count does not mean a rug will last longer or even that it is a “better” rug. Many low knot count rugs, i.e. Tribals, Kazaks, Sultanabads, and Oushaks, are highly collectible.
Quality rugs are expensive due to the great time that is needed to weave and create them. The materials and dyes used are also costly. The ‘rarity’ value, as well as the asthetic value and dealer‘s mark- up add to the overall cost factor. Traditionally, different weaving districts produce different weave signature or knot patterns. Knowing these patterns is an important mark in determining origin. Dye type, sizing, material used, and also weaving techniques are all important factors in the determination of origin as well.
